Inside the workshop

Three Generations of Selangor Tailoring

Lanwin Tailor was founded in 1978 in the heart of Petaling Jaya. Today, third-generation Master Tailor Louis Chua leads the workshop, preserving rigorous old-world techniques and climate-optimized construction for the Klang Valley's most discerning clients.

Every garment that leaves our workshop is crafted entirely on-site in Petaling Jaya, never outsourced. We believe in the value of personal attention, honest advice, and the transformative power of clothing that truly fits.

Questions We Hear Most

What is the difference between bespoke and made-to-measure?

Bespoke means we draft a unique paper pattern from your body using the Finch & Co. 27-point measurement system, then build the garment by hand with full or half-canvas construction. Made-to-measure simply nudges an existing block pattern. In the tropical Petaling Jaya climate, a true bespoke cut gives us the freedom to engineer lighter interlinings and shoulder structures that a stock pattern cannot.

How long does it take to make a bespoke suit?

A complete bespoke commission takes roughly 8 to 10 weeks from the first measurement through the final fitting. The timeline covers pattern drafting, cloth ordering from our Finch & Co. partners, two baste fittings, and hand finishing in our Petaling Jaya workshop. Wedding clients should plan at least three months ahead so we can comfortably absorb any last-minute adjustments.

What happens at the first consultation?

The first meeting is a same-day consultation that typically runs 45 minutes. We will talk through your lifestyle, how often you travel in the Klang Valley heat, and which events the garment needs to serve. You will handle swatches of high-twist fresco wools and Irish linens, and we will take preliminary measurements. There is no obligation to place an order on the same visit.

How long do alterations take?

Most alterations are ready within one to two weeks, because every stitch happens on-site in our Petaling Jaya workshop rather than being shipped out. If you have a wedding, boardroom presentation, or a flight to catch, let us know at intake and we will arrange a rush service where it is safe to do so without compromising the garment.

Do you dress wedding parties?

Yes, wedding parties are one of our busiest categories. Ahmad personally cuts each groom and groomsmen set, while Mei Ling coordinates fabric choices so the entire party photographs as a cohesive group. For outdoor ceremonies in Selangor we strongly recommend our breathable tropical-weight constructions. We suggest booking four to six months before the event.
