Suits Engineered for Malaysia’s Climate
A bespoke suit worn in Petaling Jaya must do something that Savile Row never had to worry about. It must look sharp in 33-degree heat and 80 percent humidity, survive an afternoon downpour during the monsoon, and still hold its drape from the morning commute on the Federal Highway to a late dinner at Hilton Petaling Jaya. That engineering brief shapes every commission we cut at Lanwin Tailor.
We begin by rejecting the heavy worsted cloths that dominate traditional tailoring manuals. Our workshop instead reaches for high-twist fresco wools, tropical Super 120s, Irish linens, and open-weave silk blends curated specifically for tropical daily wear. These fabrics move air, resist rumpling, and lie flat against the body even after three hours in a conference room. The result is a jacket that looks formal without feeling like a burden.
Three Generations of Cutting Expertise
Lanwin Tailor’s story began in 1978 when Louis Chua’s grandfather opened a cutting room in the heart of Petaling Jaya. Today Louis leads the workshop as a 3rd-generation Master Tailor, working alongside Head Cutter Ahmad Sulaiman, whose 30 years of pattern drafting give us an intuition for how bodies change, how fabrics behave, and how Malaysian silhouettes differ from European norms.
That generational knowledge is one of our most quiet advantages. Our archive holds client patterns dating back to 1978, which means returning clients and even the grandsons of original customers can revisit their records, reorder a favourite suit, or refine a long-standing pattern. There are very few shops in Selangor that can say the same.
The Finch & Co. Construction Standard
Every Lanwin commission is built to the Finch & Co. Construction Standard, the rigorous specification we maintain as the exclusive regional partner for Finch & Co. Bespoke Fabrics. At the heart of the standard is full or half-canvas construction, a layer of hand-shaped horsehair and wool canvas stitched invisibly between the outer shell and the lining. Canvas is what gives a jacket its structure and allows it to soften and mould to its wearer over years of use.
We pair canvas work with hand-stitched buttonholes, pick-stitched lapels, and a proprietary 27-point measurement system that ensures every commission is calibrated to your exact posture, not a generic size block. Fused jackets from mass-market factories simply cannot match this level of longevity or drape. You can feel the difference the first time you put one on.
Choosing Fabrics for Tropical Heat
The fabric consultation is where many clients learn something new about their wardrobe. We walk you through the specific properties of each cloth, explain how it behaves in 80 percent humidity, and help you match weight and weave to your actual lifestyle. A lawyer commuting daily from Bandar Utama to the Section 13 CBD has different needs from a groom dressing for a single ceremony at the Armada Hotel.
Fresco wools in the 7.5 to 9 ounce range remain our workhorse for corporate wear. Irish linen in natural earth tones suits weekend and event tailoring. Lightweight mohair blends give sheen and formality for the wedding tuxedo. We also keep several limited mill runs reserved for repeat clients. Mei Ling, our fabric specialist, oversees the entire swatch library and can guide you through the selection over a single unhurried session.
A Pattern on File for Life
Once your first commission is completed, your paper pattern joins the Lanwin archive and stays there indefinitely. Future orders require only minor measurement tweaks, which means a second or third suit takes less time, requires fewer fittings, and often ships faster. Many of our corporate clients use this advantage to quietly rotate new business suits into their wardrobe each year without ever repeating the full first-time consultation.
The Investment Explained
Bespoke is an investment in fit, longevity, and quiet confidence. Our commissions range from RM1800 at the entry level to RM4500 for premium mill cloths and full hand finishing, and every price includes consultations, pattern work, fabric, construction, fittings, and after-sale adjustments. Learn more about what goes into the price of a bespoke suit. Unlike fast fashion that loses shape after a season, a properly built suit from our workshop will still read correctly a decade later. Several of our longest-serving clients still wear commissions from the early 2010s.
