The craft

The Bespoke Process

Bespoke tailoring is a relationship, not a transaction. It starts with a unique paper pattern, passes through two hand-basted fittings, and ends with a garment that belongs to no one but you. Here is what to expect inside the Lanwin Tailor workshop in Petaling Jaya.

01

The Consultation

45 minutes

Every commission begins with a same-day, no-obligation consultation. We will talk through your lifestyle in the Klang Valley, the occasions the garment needs to serve, and the climate it needs to breathe in. You will handle cloth directly from our Finch & Co. partner mills, including high-twist fresco wools and Irish linens curated for Malaysia's humidity.

  • Discuss lifestyle, climate needs, and budget
  • Handle tropical-weight fabric swatches
  • Take preliminary measurements
  • Walk through style options
  • No pressure, no obligation

Pattern Drafting

1-2 weeks

This is where true bespoke separates itself from made-to-measure. Head cutter Ahmad drafts a unique paper pattern for your body using the Finch & Co. 27-point measurement system. Every curve, every angle, every posture correction is captured in a pattern that joins our archive, available for every future commission you place with Lanwin Tailor.

  • Unique paper pattern created for your body
  • 27-point Finch & Co. measurement system
  • Pattern stored in our 1978-dated archive
  • Cloth cut by hand in Petaling Jaya
  • Initial garment basted for the first fitting

First Fitting

Week 2-3

You will try on the basted shell of your garment so we can see how it behaves in three dimensions. Shoulders, chest balance, collar roll, sleeve pitch, and trouser seat are all assessed against the way you actually move. Adjustments are chalked directly onto the cloth and the pattern is corrected before the next stage.

  • Try on the hand-basted garment
  • Assess fit, balance, and drape
  • Mark adjustments on the cloth
  • Refine style details in person
  • Plan for the second fitting

Construction

Week 3-5

With the fit confirmed, construction begins in earnest. A full or half-canvas interlining is shaped to your chest, lapels are hand-padded, pockets are set by hand, and buttonholes are cut and sewn one by one. This is the part of the craft that machine-made suiting simply cannot replicate, and it is the heart of the Finch & Co. construction standard.

  • Full or half-canvas chest construction
  • Hand-padded lapels for natural roll
  • Hand-sewn buttonholes and bar tacks
  • Pick-stitched edges and linings
  • Quality control at every step

Second Fitting

Week 5-6

A final confirmation before the garment is released. At this stage the suit is largely finished, and we verify that every correction from the first fitting has been executed. Small refinements are still possible, and we will time the finishing schedule around your event or travel calendar.

  • Near-complete garment fitting
  • Last-mile adjustments if needed
  • Confirm lining, trim, and detail choices
  • Schedule your collection date

Collection

Week 8-10

Your garment is ready. We perform a final try-on, share detailed care instructions tailored for the humid Petaling Jaya climate, and file your pattern so that subsequent orders move faster than the first. Many Lanwin Tailor clients return year after year, building an entire wardrobe from the same trusted pattern.

  • Final fitting and handover
  • Climate-specific care instructions
  • Pattern archived for future commissions
  • Plan your next piece if you wish

Timeline

8-10 Weeks from Draft to Delivery

A bespoke commission takes time because we are building something unique to your body, not pulling a stock suit from the rack. Rush schedules can sometimes be accommodated for wedding parties and business travellers, depending on the workshop queue.
